Todays guest post for the Creating a Meaningful Home Blog Series is Cassie of Primitive and Proper. Welcome Cassie
*******************
Hello, SAS Interiors fans! I am Cassie from Primitive and Proper, a blog that started as an extension of my business, but has become more of a journal of my projects, home, and family. I am honored that Jenna has asked me to participate in her series on creating a meaningful home.
I am a firm believer in ones home being a true reflection of oneself. Each one of us is blessed with unique talents, interests, quirks, and passions. As human beings we are given the chance to express who we are through fashion, writing, art, and even home decor. So in ord er to show you how I have created a home that is meaningful and represents me, as opposed to a catalog ordered home, I need to tell you a little bit about myself as well.
My husband and I are both readers we love to be surrounded by books. This passion has trickled down into our children as well. Because of that, bookcases are essential and can be found in several rooms of our home.
We have bookcases in the living room
And we have bookcases in the kids rooms, and even space for them in the guest rooms, in case our guests share our whole familys love for reading.
I am a little bit nostalgic I love surrounding myself with pieces that trigger certain memories, whether they are old or more recent memories.
This dresser in the guest room actually has been in my family for years. My father refinished it years ago, I think before I was even born perhaps. I preserved the wood top, but painted the base.
And here is another shot of the guest room to show you that book space I mentioned I have some of my all time favorites on hand for my guests. :)
And sometimes these pieces dont have to trigger memories, but perhaps their own history evokes something in me. As a child , my mom took me to antique shops all the time. This sign that I found at the auction reminds me of those trips. We keep it in our dining room. (Pardon the thanksgiving picture; we are headed into a kitchen reno, so I couldnt get you a current one that would look decent!)
I am a mother and an art-lover. I want to encourage my children to express themselves in their art, and I want them to be proud of what they can create. The kids art gallery wall might be one of my favorite parts of the house, and I know they love it and proud of their gallery. (And again, poor photo quality! AH! My proper lens gave out and I had to use my phone for this one!)
I am a little off-beat and I love to add a little punchiness and that goes in how I dress, decorate, write I love to add a little quirk! One of my favorite projects to date is our chalkboard wall I will never tire of chalkboard paint. I love changing out the messages.
These photos are from when it was completed earlier this year.
Blues calm me. I tend to be a high energy person, going from project to project. I find that if I surround myself with blues, I can find my center a little bit easier. Our master bedroom is a dark moody blue that calms me, but it has the punchiness of a turquoise dresser, so it is the room that i think exudes my personality the most.
I cherish thoughtful gifts. Many of the items around my home were given to me by people I care about. I love having those reminders throughout my home. I have several handmade items around my home (lots of treasures from my kids, but not time enough to share all of that!), but one of my favorites is in the guest bathroom. A dear friend had her husband create this art that is actually reversible seashells on one side, or I can slide the insert out (he custom built this frame for this purpose) and flip it to an octopus side! Its awesome and special to me, too!
I believe that you need to love where you live embrace the existing character of a home, and add your own personality while meeting the needs of your family; do this and you will truly fall in love with your home.
Thank you so much, Jenna, for having me here today!
Thanks Cassie for sharing the beautiful ways youve created a meaningful home. I love your thought on embracing the existing character of a home!
I love Cassies style and how her fam ily is at the forefront of how shes created a home that is personal and unique.
Her blog, Primitive and Proper, is filled with plenty of DIY creations and transformations. One of my favorites is a simple, but dynamic upcycle, and includes a little chevron love
Red and White Chevron Stool
Head on over to Primitive and Proper, and give Cassie a BIG HELLO!
